We've done our research, and developed a series of learning plans based on the skills that are in the highest demand today. Bottom-line, everyone needs basic computer skills to function in today's job market. These basic skills include the ability to use common application programs such as word-processors, spreadsheets, database programs, and presentation software. Additionally, use of email and familiarity with the internet are becoming basic requirements for most jobs. Beyond the basic computer skills, requirements necessary to pursue computer-based careers can vary significantly depending on the nature of the career.

First, take the Interest Quiz (offered by the National Workforce Center for Emerging Technologies) to decide which information and communications technology (ICT) careers appeal to you. The quiz will suggest specific areas, such as support, technical writing, development or systems administration. Choose any of the learning plans below to get started.

Once you complete the quiz, look up your suggested job titles in the Explore Job Roles page offered by CompTIA. For example, if the Interest Quiz suggests technical support, enter “tech support” in the job title field. You can also search by IT Concentrations, such as administration or development, by using the search criteria drop-down box. Click on the job title to read a detailed description. If it is something that interests you, take the Skills Gap Analysis and compare your current skills and abilities to those needed for this job role.

After you've identified your desired job role and understand the skills that need to be developed, contact a VTEC Training Advisor to personalize a learning plan to achieve your goals.
