Develop a prospecting awareness

Develop a prospecting awareness

Let’s face it, prospecting is tough. No one likes to go out and prospect for business. Successful sales professionals understand however, prospecting keeps them selling and in front of potential buyers. Without a full pipeline, poor to average sales people have more slumps, more ups and downs, more frustration, and more worry. The non-prospector’s make excuses like, "we need more leads" or "we need better advertising" or "it’s our bad time of year" and numerous other excuses instead of finding new business.

One of the easiest ways to develop a prospecting awareness is to schedule time each and every work week dedicated to prospecting. Become aware of your surroundings and listen for clues in conversations. Have a 30 and a 60 second commercial for use when you’re introduced to new people at networking and social events letting them know exactly what you do. Ask every one for a referral. Let them know you really appreciate the referrals they do give you. Make sure you ask prospects you don’t sell for a referral. Just because there wasn’t a fit for you doesn’t mean that they don’t know someone who might. If you travel for your job, airports, hotels, and the gym are good places to prospect. What about the line for the rental car return or hotel check out?

Developing a prospecting awareness will make your sales jump drastically. It’s one of the keys that separate the super stars, the top performers from the rest of the pack. Start making prospecting a priority and watch the magic unfold.
